CSPA Action Alert

State and Federal Water Contractors Launch Great Water Grab

JOIN US FOR A RALLY TO SAVE THE DELTA AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA RIVERS

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013 at NOON

WEST STEPS OF THE STATE CAPITOL, SACRAMENTO (CAPITOL MALL AND 10TH between L & N Streets)

The plan to route Sacramento River water beneath the Delta for export to southern California, misleadingly called the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP), has been released and the formal public comment period begins on Friday the 13th.  Join CSPA and a broad array of environmental, commercial and recreational fishing, tribal, environmental justice, farmers, boaters and taxpayer groups plus Delta businesses, agencies and elected officials for a rally at the State Capitol to fight the proposed Delta Water Tunnels.  Bring friends and your neighbors to help show our united opposition to the Governor’s Water Tunnels.

If this monstrous, fifty billion dollar scheme to construct two 30-plus mile long tunnels is approved and built, massive quantities of freshwater will be taken out of the Sacramento River before reaching the Delta, to be delivered to the southland to subsidize corporate agriculture and runaway development.  New reservoirs will have to be built to fill the tunnels and the impacts will extend from the Bay into the high Sierras and forever change the hydrology of Central Valley Rivers.  It is a death sentence for our fisheries.

It is impossible to understate the threat BDCP poses to our rivers and the Bay-Delta ecosystem.  Once these Tunnels are constructed, we can forget any hope of restoring our depleted fisheries and degraded water quality.  BDCP is a blatant water grab by powerful special interests in the southlands that threatens the fisheries, farms, communities and future prosperity of northern California.  It will saddle taxpayers and ratepayers with billions upon billions of dollars of debt and deprive us of the ability to provide for a better future.

If we prevail in this fight, many other battles will remain.  But if we lose, we not only lose our past victories but also our future opportunity to protect and restore the Bay-Delta and northern California’s historic free flowing rivers.

This is the beginning of a long battle.  We must mobilize an army to turn out Friday, December 13.  We must make our voices heard for endangered fish, threatened wildlife, for our precious rivers, and for those who follow us… the countless generations of Californians to come.

Beyond the major rally on the Capitol Steps on Friday the 13th, there are two other options to show your opposition.

  1. On Monday, December 9, 2013, there will be a press conference beginning at noon in Room 112 of the State Capitol sponsored by a coalition of environmental, fishing, farming, government and water agencies.  CSPA is a participant.
  2. Also on Monday, there will be a rally at the Santa Clara Valley Water District, 5700 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA 95118 beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Also supported by Californians for a Fair Water Policy.  Again, CSPA is a participant.

And don’t forget to write your letters to Governor Brown expressing your opposition to the peripheral tunnels plan!  Letters should be addressed to:

Governor Jerry Brown, c/o State Capitol, Suite 1173, Sacramento, CA 95814

The salutation should read: The Honorable Edmund G. Brown
