{"id":1029,"date":"2016-07-11T06:01:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T13:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1029"},"modified":"2016-07-07T06:02:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T13:02:10","slug":"striped-bass-comeback-stalls-in-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1029","title":{"rendered":"Striped Bass Comeback Stalls in June"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=922\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">June 1 post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I wrote of an apparently strong year class of striped bass developing in 2016. \u00a0This analysis was based on May surveys. \u00a0I suggested then the comeback could fall short after higher exports began in June. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of the two DFW <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfg.ca.gov\/delta\/data\/20mm\/CPUE_Map3.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20-mm Surveys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for June are in, and these results indeed show a sharp decline in the densities of juvenile striped bass between early and late June (Figure 1), coincident with a rise in south Delta exports over the month (Figure 2). \u00a0Some of the greatest changes occurred in the interior Delta (900 stations), where the effect of exports would be greatest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The late June densities, though higher than 2014 and 2015, are consistent with densities over the previous decade of striped bass decline and are lower than the prior decade of striped bass recovery. \u00a0With the demise of the Delta smelt population, it may be appropriate to consider striped bass once again as the Delta\u2019s \u201ccanary-in-the-coal-mine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1031\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1031\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1031\" src=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image03.png\" alt=\" Figure 1.
