{"id":1604,"date":"2017-04-30T10:15:24","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T17:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1604"},"modified":"2017-04-30T10:15:36","modified_gmt":"2017-04-30T17:15:36","slug":"longfin-smelt-return-from-the-ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1604","title":{"rendered":"Longfin Smelt Return from the Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in December, I <a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1360\">posted<\/a> that longfin smelt may be gone.\u00a0 Numbers were way down and early winter 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=1505\">larvae surveys<\/a> indicated a very poor spawn.\u00a0 But suddenly in March, larval smelt began showing up in the CDFW <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfg.ca.gov\/delta\/data\/20mm\/CPUE_Map.asp\">20-mm survey<\/a> in San Pablo Bay and in the Napa River (Figure 1).\u00a0 A bunch of adult longfin must have come in from the ocean and surrounding San Francisco Bay with this winter\u2019s very high Delta outflows, and spawned in the Napa River.\u00a0 While these larval densities are one or two orders of magnitude below previous wet year abundance (1999, 2006, and 2011), they are much higher than those observed in other years over the past decade.\u00a0 Despite very low recruitment during the recent drought (2013-2015), they were able to muster enough 1-2 year-old adult spawners from around the Bay and nearby ocean to provide a decent spawn in the Napa River.\u00a0 There appears to be some hope for longfin smelt after all.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1605\" style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/longfin-smelt-catch-densities-03-2017.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1605\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1605\" src=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/longfin-smelt-catch-densities-03-2017.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/longfin-smelt-catch-densities-03-2017.png 642w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/longfin-smelt-catch-densities-03-2017-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/longfin-smelt-catch-densities-03-2017-392x300.png 392w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
