{"id":2230,"date":"2018-07-03T07:00:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T14:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=2230"},"modified":"2018-07-01T08:47:04","modified_gmt":"2018-07-01T15:47:04","slug":"sacramento-river-low-flows-and-high-water-temperatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=2230","title":{"rendered":"Sacramento River Low Flows and High Water Temperatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Low flows in the lower Sacramento River above the Feather River and warm flows from the Feather River are compromising the summer habitat of smelt and salmon in the lower Sacramento River and the Delta, violating state and federal water quality standards.<\/p>\n<h2>Lower Sacramento River at Wilkins Slough<\/h2>\n<p>The Sacramento River at Wilkins Slough at river mile 118, 63 miles upstream of the Sacramento Delta, has low flows and high water temperatures (Figure 1).\u00a0 The high water temperatures are a violation of the 68<sup>o<\/sup>F (average daily) water quality standard and are stressful to migrating salmon.<\/p>\n<h2>Lower Sacramento River at Verona below mouth of Feather River<\/h2>\n<p>The lower Sacramento River 50 miles downstream of Wilkins Slough at Verona, just downstream of the mouth of the Feather River, has near lethal water temperatures, far above the water quality standard (Figure 2).\u00a0 The high temperatures are likely due in part to recent increased releases from Oroville Reservoir to lower water levels for the spillway repair project.<\/p>\n<h2>Lower Sacramento River in Delta<\/h2>\n<p>The lower Sacramento River at Freeport in the north Delta, 25 miles downstream of Verona, has near lethal water temperatures for Delta smelt (Figure 3).\u00a0\u00a0 The high temperatures are likely due in part to recent increased releases from Oroville Reservoir to lower water levels for the spillway repair project.\u00a0 The north Delta water temperatures are also high in part due to lower than normal net river flow (as measured at Rio Vista 20 miles downstream of Freeport \u2013 Figure 4).\u00a0 The low flows have also led to encroaching salinity at Emmaton several miles downstream of Rio Vista (Figure 5), also in violation of water quality standards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2231\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2231\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2231\" src=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-1024x610.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-1024x610.png 1024w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-768x458.png 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-500x298.png 500w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2.png 1428w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
