{"id":3113,"date":"2020-03-23T19:23:34","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T02:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3113"},"modified":"2020-03-23T19:23:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T02:23:34","slug":"how-many-delta-smelt-remain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3113","title":{"rendered":"How many Delta Smelt Remain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because Delta smelt are now rarely being captured in regular CDFW fish surveys, the US Fish and Wildlife Service began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/lodi\/juvenile_fish_monitoring_program\/jfmp_index.htm\">Enhanced Delta Smelt Monitoring Program (EDSM) <\/a>in 2017.\u00a0 Results for the first four years show adult Delta smelt are still around in winter spawning season \u2013 barely (Figure 1).\u00a0 They continue to be found throughout the northern Delta and Suisun Bay\/Marsh (Figure 2).\u00a0 Hotspots (likely spawning concentrations) were in west Delta near Rio Vista and the Deepwater Ship Channel.\u00a0 Juveniles continue to show up in EDSM summer surveys in the usual places (Figure 3).\u00a0 There may be a few thousand adult Delta smelt left as of 2019\/2020 based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/sfbaydelta\/EndangeredSpecies\/Species\/Accounts\/DeltaSmelt\/DeltaSmeltQandA.htm\">US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3114\" style=\"width: 936px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3114\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3114\" src=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/figure-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"926\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/figure-1.jpg 926w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/figure-1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/figure-1-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/figure-1-447x300.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 926px) 100vw, 926px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
