{"id":3146,"date":"2020-04-09T21:12:55","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T04:12:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3146"},"modified":"2020-04-09T21:12:55","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T04:12:55","slug":"pacific-herring-february-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3146","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Herring \u2013 February 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article in San Francisco Estuary Magazine, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfestuary.org\/estuary-news-where-have-all-the-herring-gone\/\"><em>Where have all the Herring Gone<\/em><\/a><em>?<\/em><em>,\u201d <\/em>sums up the status of the San Francisco Bay\u2019s Pacific herring population.\u00a0 In my last post on the herring, <a href=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=2149\">May 2018<\/a>, I described recent population trends indicating a continuing long-term decline in reproduction in the Bay estuary and a withering away of the herring commercial fishery in the Bay.\u00a0 That trend continues downward in herring larvae densities by salinity isohalines in February 2020 (Figure 1), as compared with 2018 (Figure 2) and 2014 (Figure 3), years with similar winter Delta outflows.\u00a0 I cannot update the Bay survey data in Figure 4 after spring 2017, because the Bay portion of the survey has been discontinued.\u00a0 Herring larvae production remains a critical indicator of Bay ecosystem health, because herring use the Bay for reproduction and that production likely depends on the direct and indirect effects of freshwater inflow to the Bay.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3148\" style=\"width: 1534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3148\" src=\"http:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1524\" height=\"845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1.jpg 1524w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1-500x277.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1524px) 100vw, 1524px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
