{"id":3643,"date":"2021-04-19T18:43:24","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T01:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3643"},"modified":"2021-04-19T18:43:24","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T01:43:24","slug":"summer-shasta-releases-are-too-high-and-lower-sacramento-river-summer-flows-are-too-low-lessons-learned-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3643","title":{"rendered":"Summer Shasta Releases Are Too High and Lower Sacramento River Summer Flows Are Too Low: Lessons Learned \u2013 #5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Following an introductory post, this is the seventh post in a\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3533\"><em>series<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0on the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.documentcloud.org\/documents\/20475924\/pages\/exhibit-15-p43-xlarge.gif?ts=1612911684137.199\"><em>lessons learned<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) from the 2013-2015 drought that devastated Sacramento River salmon populations.\u00a0 This post addresses Lesson #5.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3644\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2068\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3.jpeg 2068w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-300x21.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-1024x73.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-768x55.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-1536x110.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-2048x147.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image1-3-500x36.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2068px) 100vw, 2068px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The reason for high summer releases to the Sacramento River from Shasta and Keswick reservoirs is to meet the demands of Sacramento Valley water contractors for stored water.\u00a0 For example, in 2012, summer releases to the Sacramento were 15,000 cfs, with roughly 7000-8000 cfs diverted in the Sacramento Valley for water supply use (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Reclamation learned during the 2012-2015 drought that, if the previous year was wet, it must still limit water releases in summer of dry years to 12,000-13,000 cfs (Figures 2 and 3) to preserve Shasta Reservoir\u2019s cold-water pool supply.\u00a0 One consequence of this limitation as implemented has been less flow in the lower river 150-200 miles downstream.\u00a0 This reduced flow has exacerbated water temperature problems in the lower river.\u00a0 Reclamation has likely also reduced water deliveries in the Sacramento Valley to some degree, but the extent of any such reductions is difficult to tease out.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the lessons learned, Reclamation in 2018 targeted a 53<sup>o<\/sup>F water temperature limit in the main spawning reach of winter-run salmon from Keswick Dam (RM 300) down to the mouth of Clear Creek (RM290) (Figure 4).\u00a0 In the past, the water temperature limit had been higher (56-58<sup>o<\/sup>F).\u00a0 In 2020, the target was once again set higher to sustain a depleted cold-water pool supply through the summer and fall.
