{"id":3970,"date":"2021-11-09T20:25:17","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T04:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3970"},"modified":"2021-11-09T20:25:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T04:25:17","slug":"american-river-hatchery-salmon-releases-2020-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3970","title":{"rendered":"American River Hatchery Salmon Releases \u2013 2020\/2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Escapement of American River fall-run salmon dropped after recent drought years (2013-2015, Figure 1).\u00a0 It is reasonable to expect it would fall again in 2022 and 2023 as a consequence of the 2020-2021 drought period.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/nimbus-fish-hatchery-to-increase-production-of-chinook-salmon-by-500000-fish-further-experiment-with-new-release-sites\">November 2, 2021 post<\/a>, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced a plan to increase releases of hatchery smolts from its Nimbus Fish Hatchery on the American River in 2022, from the normal 4 million to 4.5 million.\u00a0 CDFW\u2019s post stated in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cChinook salmon returns to the American River declined significantly during California\u2019s last drought,\u201d said Jason Julienne, supervisor for CDFW\u2019s North Central Region fish hatcheries. \u201cWe\u2019re using those observations and that experience to get ahead of any population declines this time around by increasing production to help sustain this important salmon run.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=3262\">June 2020 post<\/a>, I summarized annual hatchery releases of American River fall-run salmon smolts for years 1991-2019.\u00a0 I suggested that the long-term declines in escapement were also due to reductions in overall smolt releases and to an increasing proportion of river releases as opposed to Bay releases in drier years (Figure 2).<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, a total of 4.44 million smolts were released, with 2.63 million released to the river and 1.81 million to the Bay (Figure 3).\u00a0 The 1.6-million smolts released in-river in May 2020 were subject to low flows in the river and the Delta and to high water temperatures (Figures 4 and 5). \u00a0As a consequence, I would expect 2022 escapement to follow the general downward trend.<\/p>\n<p>In drought year 2021, all 4 million smolts were trucked and released to the Bay. \u00a0However, I still expect 2023 escapement to be reduced as a consequence of the generally poor survival of smolts released to the Bay in drier years with low Delta outflow.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-3970-1' id='fnref-3970-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(3970)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Until flow conditions in the river and Bay in dry years improve, a 12.5% increase in hatchery smolt releases is unlikely to improve escapement to recent historical levels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3971\" style=\"width: 1465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3971\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3971\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1455\" height=\"821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1.png 1455w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1-1024x578.png 1024w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/chart1-500x282.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1455px) 100vw, 1455px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
