{"id":4375,"date":"2023-08-09T06:58:39","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T13:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4375"},"modified":"2023-08-09T06:58:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T13:58:39","slug":"striped-bass-2023-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4375","title":{"rendered":"Striped Bass 2023 \u2013 Recovery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I last updated the status of striped bass in <a href=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?cat=16\">August 2021<\/a>, it did not look good.\u00a0 The fall index was at its minimum (Figure 1).\u00a0 In 2021 and 2022, the index remained unchanged \u2013 as expected for drought years.<\/p>\n<p>With 2023 very wet and with somewhat reasonable indices in wet years 2017 and 2019, combined with the fact that stripers start reaching maturity at ages 4 to 6, might we expect some level of recovery in this fall\u2019s index?\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 The numbers of 4-to-6-year-old adult spawning stripers should be up this year.<\/p>\n<p>South Delta export pump salvage of age 0 stripers was low in summer 2022 a drought year (Figure 2).\u00a0 But it is much higher since the Bureau of Reclamation turned on the CVP\u2019s Delta pumps in late June 2023 (Figure 3), even compared to 2017 (Figure 4), which had moderate indices (see Figure 1).\u00a0 With the state pumps turning on in early July and exports going to a maximum 10,000+ cfs (20,000 AF\/day) there are much higher striped bass age-0 salvage numbers in this wet year.\u00a0 The fall striper index should indicate at least a modest recovery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4376\" style=\"width: 1377px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4376\" class=\"wp-image-4376 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1.jpeg\" alt=\"Graph showing Striped bass Fall Midwater Trawl Survey Index (log10[index+1]) versus prior Summer Townet Index (log10).
