{"id":4847,"date":"2025-11-03T15:52:38","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4847"},"modified":"2025-11-03T15:52:38","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:52:38","slug":"the-2025-sacramento-river-salmon-run-early-summer-conditions-were-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4847","title":{"rendered":"The 2025 Sacramento River Salmon Run \u2013 Early Summer Conditions were poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The limited 2025 salmon fishing season opened in mid-July and continues through October on the Feather, American, and Mokelumne rivers.\u00a0 Early summer (July-August) conditions were tough for the beginning of the run and early fishing.\u00a0 The river, Delta, and Bay in August were too warm despite three wet years in a row with above average reservoir storage and below normal summer air temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>The lower Sacramento River was too warm (Figure 1). Flows dropped in mid-August with two-thirds of reservoir releases being diverted before reaching the Delta.\u00a0 Water temperatures were above the 20\u00baC standard to protect salmon during their run from the ocean to the rivers.\u00a0 River flow should be near 10,000 cfs to maintain the water temperature standard.<\/p>\n<p>The Delta was too warm (Figure 2).\u00a0 Water temperatures in August reached the 22\u00baC level, considered highly stressful and avoided by salmon, as Delta inflow dropped from 20,000 cfs to 10,000 cfs.\u00a0 Delta inflow at Freeport should be about 20,000 cfs for good fishing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The Bay was too warm (Figure 3).\u00a0 Water temperatures exceeded 22\u00baC, and dissolved oxygen fell to near the standard of 6 mg\/ l.\u00a0 Delta outflow fell to near 4000 cfs, while south Delta exports exceeded 10,000 cfs.\u00a0 Delta outflow should be around 10,000 cfs for good fishing conditions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4848\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4848\" class=\"wp-image-4848 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image1-1024x527.jpeg\" alt=\"Figure 1.
