{"id":4874,"date":"2025-12-10T06:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T14:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4874"},"modified":"2025-12-08T20:17:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T04:17:22","slug":"american-river-salmon-update-spawning-season-november-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4874","title":{"rendered":"American River Salmon Update \u2013 Spawning Season, November 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4429\">10\/19\/2023 post<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=4798\">11\/21\/2024 post<\/a>, I discussed how the lack of access to Folsom Reservoir\u2019s deep cold-water pool results in delayed natural and hatchery spawning of American River fall-run salmon. \u00a0Delays, and spawning in warmer water, cause reductions in spawning success, smolt production, recruitment into harvestable fishery stocks, and spawning escapement (run size) to the American River. \u00a0Lower salmon contributions from the American River significantly reduce California coastal and river salmon fishery stocks. \u00a0Poor production in the American River contributed to the closure of California salmon fisheries in 2023-2025.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2020-2022 drought, Reclamation released water from the lower-level power bypass (sacrificing hydropower production) to provide the cold water (&lt;55\u00baF) salmon needed for spawning in the ten-mile spawning reach from Nimbus Dam (near Fair Oaks gage) to the William Pond gage (Figure 1). \u00a0This is the prime spawning reach for salmon in the lower American River.\u00a0 However, in the fall of the wetter years 2023-2025, Reclamation did not use the power bypass to release cold water (Figures 2 and 3), despite higher storage levels than during the drought (Figure 4).\u00a0 The lack of cold water delayed natural spawning and hatchery egg taking, to the detriment of egg viability, fry production, and smolts reaching the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the number of adult salmon returning to the American River to spawn (escapement) is the important measure of success.\u00a0 There are many factors that may contribute to the number of returns.\u00a0 Recent returns are up (Figure 5).\u00a0 The 2023 and 2024 returns were good despite having been the product of the 2020-2022 drought reproduction (Figurer 6).\u00a0 Closed fisheries in 2023 and 2024 contributed to higher escapements.<\/p>\n<p>I also believe efforts to improve fall water temperatures below Folsom during the drought improved both the wild and hatchery components of escapement.\u00a0 I remain concerned that a return to warmer fall water temperatures will hinder future escapement.<\/p>\n<p>I am also concerned with apparent efforts to sustain higher fall 2025 reservoir levels (see Figure 4) by reducing tailwater stream flow rates (Figure 7).\u00a0 Such low flows reduce the quantity and quality of salmon spawning habitat.\u00a0 Many critical spawning side channels become dewatered at such low flows<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-4874-1' id='fnref-4874-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(4874)'>1<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 Main channel velocities, substrate, and depths are also compromised at low flow rates.<\/p>\n<p>Reclamation \u00a0also reduced funding for the salmon hatchery and for river habitat projects in 2025, and will likely do the same in subsequent years.\u00a0 This strategy will not help to recover American River salmon stocks to levels that once again can contribute toward commercial and recreational salmon fisheries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4875\" style=\"width: 478px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4875\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4875\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image1-1.png 468w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image1-1-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
