{"id":5041,"date":"2026-09-26T18:58:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T01:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=5041"},"modified":"2026-09-29T19:06:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T02:06:16","slug":"will-harvest-moon-bring-in-this-years-big-salmon-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/?p=5041","title":{"rendered":"Will Harvest Moon bring in this year\u2019s big salmon run?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Will the Harvest Moon (9\/26) with its spring tides (Figure 1) and cooler air and water temperatures (Figures 2 and 3) bring in this year\u2019s expected big salmon run to the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary?\u00a0 Will East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) release fall salmon water pulses from Camanche Dam on the Mokelumne River beginning at the end of September, and if so, will they help attract the salmon as in prior years?<\/p>\n<p>All the factors look good except for possibly one.\u00a0 Like last year, Reclamation is not implementing the Fall X2 provision of the 2019 Delta Smelt Biological Opinion \u2013 a provision that prescribes Delta outflows near 10,000 cfs in September of above-normal and wet years. \u00a0Water years 2024-2026 were above-normal water years.\u00a0 Fall X2 September outflows were only provided in 2024 (Figure 4).\u00a0 Instead, September 2025 and 2026 Delta outflows were about 5,000 cfs, only slightly higher than drought year 2021 and 2022 September outflows.<\/p>\n<p>Whether September Delta outflows are an important factor in the timing of the fall-Chinook salmon run into and through the Bay is a topic subject to further review.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5042\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5042\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5042\" src=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1-1024x800.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1-1024x800.png 1024w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1-768x600.png 768w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1-384x300.png 384w, https:\/\/calsport.org\/fisheriesblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image1.png 1102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
