California’s native fisheries are in a state of precipitous decline. Approximately 83% of California’s native fishes are at risk of extinction

California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA) takes a multifaceted approach to address the tragic state of California’s fisheries. CSPA’s initiatives and campaigns target hydropower dams, overallocation of water, and pollution: the root causes of the collapse of freshwater ecosystems across the state.

However, a strategy to protect and restore California’s fisheries must also include measures that boost the populations of the state’s endangered fish.

CSPA favors measures that increase populations of California’s wild fish populations and also recognizes and advocates for the use of hatchery fish to maintain populations in the meantime.

CSPA campaigns for the modernization of fish hatcheries to increase populations of the state’s endangered fisheries whilst also increasing the chances of survival for wild fish. CSPA campaigns for the reconnection of habitats that have been fragmented by hydropower dams and other human activities. CSPA also campaigns for equitable access for people to enjoy and sustain themselves by fishing in the state’s rivers and Delta.
